Run by junior and senior coaches with plenty of help from senior players, the the juniors worked through skill stations in weather that was less than ideal.

But the spirits were never dampened and a good time was had by all.

Players and parents alike are pumped for the new season, which has already seen plenty of hard work done in the off-season.

Try For A Cure raises $4,700 for Sunnybrook

Monday, April 30th, 2012

By April Scott-Clarke

The Toronto Nomads Rugby Club is celebrating another successful year for its annual Try for a Cure charity touch rugby tournament, which was held at Downsview Park on April 14th. Now in its third year, the tournament drew approximately 150 players and volunteers from across the city, raising $4,700.

Rob Lee, club captain for the Toronto Saracens, has played in the tournament the past two years. In his 40 years of playing rugby, this type of tournament is a first for him. “It’s excellent, it simply checks all the boxes for us,” he says. “The tournament is fun and for a good cause. We use it, also, as part of our pre-season practice program.”

Played as a sevens-style game in a round-robin format, the tournament draws players of all skill levels and experience. Interest in the tournament has grown each year, which organizers suspect is in part to better marketing, lots of word of mouth and an overall growth in sevens.

In years past the money raised from the tournament and silent auction–which is held during the social after the tournament–has gone to the cancer research program at the Princess Margaret Hospital and the Cancer Society. This year, the money has been earmarked for the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Hospital where family members of two long-time Nomads are currently being treated.
