A very good side, the Yeomen are down from the Marshall Division this year and very much want to get back up. Although they have stumbled along the way this season, the Yeomen have done an excellent job of picking up bonus points in nearly every game. Thus with only two rounds left in the season, there are only 3 points separating the Nomads' and Yeomen's first teams. The Moat is tough place to play, so in order to increase the Nomads' support there, former player Roger Best has graciously agreed to sponsor a bus from the Rose & Crown at Yonge and Eglinton to the Moat and back. The bus will leave the Rose shortly after 12 noon on Saturday and will return after the first team game finishes around 4:30pm.
$10-15 (depending on price of admission to the park) will get you a seat on the bus and all the refreshments you can can handle! To reserve a seat on the bus, e-mail Garth at torontonomads@hotmail.com or call 416-960-0519. ----------------------------------------------------------- Men's 3rd Team to Play Friendlies throughout September Despite losing a few players to college and university earlier this month, there has been great numbers at training. This weekend, there are 46 players available to play, and that's with 11 players out injured or away, who would otherwise be available. Thus the men's' 3rd team will be entered in the TRU's autumn league with games scheduled for September 17th & 24th. The full schedule will be released shortly - check here or, the fixtures page, or the message board for updates. There are a few options for the 3rds this Saturday, September 10th. It will be worked out whom we are playing by training on Thursday night. ----------------------------------------------------------- Brand New Nomad Jerseys for Sale There is an entire set of brand new Nomad game jerseys for sale. They are the traditional blue & white hooped design as worn this year by the men's 2nds & 3rds and women's 2nds.
The jerseys are $70 each. To purchase a jersey, contact Juan at nomadsrfc@msn.com ----------------------------------------------------------- U18 Boys' 2005 Award Winners With many of the 2005 Nomads' U18 boys' team already departed for university, the core of the players still in Toronto turned out at Scallywags on Wednesday, August 31st, to commemorate the season with a dinner and awards. Although the season ended without the championship trophy, there was some excellent rugby played and the numbers were always good. Coaches Bill Brown and Edd Tummon gave out the following awards:
With many boys eligible again next year for U18, 2006 looks promising for the Nomad juniors. What is also exciting is that some players who will graduate to the senior ranks next season, will have been playing with the Nomads since the Minis. It will be the first crop of players to have gone through the entire range of age-grade rugby at the Nomads. ----------------------------------------------------------- Carpool Meeting Times for Cobourg & Stoney Creek MEN'S 3RDS V. COBOURG 2NDS The Nomad men's 3rds play the Cobuorg 2nds at Fletcher's Fields at 3:10pm in the Grand Final for the B2 Division. The carpool for the 3rd team meets at York Mills at 1:00pm. ----------------------------------------------------------- Nomads Fun Touch Tournament this Saturday @ EF With the ORU Sevens called off, the Nomads will hold their own fun touch rugby tournament this Saturday at Eglinton Flats. Teams will be mixed with players from each of the senior men, senior women and both junior boys and junior girls. Eglinton Flats is at Jane & Eglinton - there is a map to Eglinton Flats here. The tournament will run from 1-4pm. Afterward everyone will head to the Fox & Fiddle on the Danforth for refreshments. ----------------------------------------------------------- Nomads 1sts & 2nds v. Burlington @ FF tonight For some reason back in February, the ORU assigned all the Ontario leagues a midweek game in July. And for some other unknown reason, the Nomads were drawn against Burlington for a midweek game (rather than say the Scottish, whose home pitch is literally a seven second walk from ours). The other thing about a Wednesday night game at Fletcher's is that there are always junior games going ont. Add in the Marshall division games and the U21 matches, it is a busy night tonight at FF. The Nomads 1sts & 2nds will kickoff as soon as possible. The Nomads pitch will be available for the 1st team game sometime between 7:00-7:30pm, while the 2nds will start on another pitch as soon as one of the junior games is over @ 7:30pm There is also the possibility that any of the junior games may not take place tonight. A lot is still up in the air. Meeting place is once again at York Mills, get there as soon as you can and no later than 5:30pm. If you are delayed, call any of the following:
----------------------------------------------------------- ORU Magnificent Sevens is Cancelled From the ORU:
Since the ORU knocked-on with the Magnificent Sevens, the Nomads will play advantage, pick up the ball and run with it: the club will hold its own fun sevens this Saturday, July 16th. The senior men & women along with juniors and old boys will have a touch tournament at a location to be announced this Saturday afternoon followed by a party at the Fox & Fiddle Saturday night. Details to follow shortly... ----------------------------------------------------------- Opposition Cries Off from Men's Thirds' Friendly The thirds were to play Cobourg 1sts on Saturday morning at the Flats, but unfortunately Cobourg had to back out late Thursday night due to lack of available players. An eleventh hour search for alternate opposition has so far turned up fruitless. The TRU was notified and they will contact us if there is anyone else looking for a game Saturday, but it is not likely. To keep up with the latest development, check the Nomads' message board. If another team is willing to play, the details will be posted there. Be aware that the location and time for any new game may easily change. If you want to make other plans for the weekend or will not be available to play at another location or time, contact Garth at torontonomads@hotmail.com.
----------------------------------------------------------- Touch Rugby & Macca's Last Stand With no games this weekend due to Canada Day, the women have the night off from training while the men will play a touch rugby tournament at Rosedale from 7:00-8:00pm.
Afterwards there will a send-off for Macca at Scallywags. As Friday is a holiday this week, the men will be able to stay late and say a proper good-bye to Macca. ----------------------------------------------------------- Incoming Junior Tour Needs Billets The Nomad Junior boys will be hosting the Chase School rugby team on Thursday July 14th and Friday July 15th. It is customary that when a visiting junior team is hosted that the host team billet the players in their homes to give the tourists a taste of Canadian life. I would like the Nomads to be good Canadian hosts and take home one or two British juniors for two nights on the aforementioned dates. There are 22 players and 3 coaches; this is a great opportunity to make friends from England and have a great time. The visitors have a very full schedule: we will meet them at Northern Secondary School at 5:45pm on Thursday, July 14th, host them for the evening, drop them off at NSS at 9:00am Friday, July 15th. We play them on Friday, July 15th, at 6:30pm, at a location still to be determined (Fletcher's or Sunnybrook), host them at a BBQ and return home for the evening. The host families will drop them off at NSS at 9:00am Saturday, July 16th. If you can host some tourists, please contact me, Bill Brown at brownis@rogers.com or 416-766-9573. ----------------------------------------------------------- Men's Coach's Message There were a number a new haircuts at training last weekend in preparation for our first televised game of the season against the Scottish. As a club we had two good sessions leading into the weekend against our oldest rivals. I believe that preparation is vitally important in the performance of a rugby team so it was fantastic to have Ian Gough ( Welsh International, and former Nomad) to give his expert advice to our forward packs. In all three games the forwards had strong performances but I was particularly impressed with the 1st XV's scrummaging and all round attitude. It was a vast improvement from the previous game against Waterloo. The thirds posted the highest score of the weekend with a 83-10 victory. The earlier games were played in steaming conditions and all the boys appreciated the water breaks every 20 minutes. The highlights of the game for me were seeing Phil Jones running and beating players at top speed. Its always good to see a player play well coming back from injury. Also I enjoyed Todd scoring his maiden try from halfback. I would liked to see a little more celebration for such a momentous occasion. Thanks to all the reserves who helped Aaron and myself with the impossible juggling act of fitting 14 players into 7 reserve spots!! The seconds were too good for their opponents, eventually winning 81-0. The forwards once again provided a rock solid foundation. They have worked well as a pack and a running as a tight unit. Stu and Baff did some great work at ruck time and Tristan and Mark made right pains of themselves in the loose. There were two standout performances for me: firstly, Tom on the wing had a great running game with his evasiveness while Mike Iker controlled the game well and chose the right times to have a go at the line from his position at standoff. He deserved the man of the match award. The firsts had a lot of soul searching after the Waterloo performance. As I said earlier, I was pleased with the attitude at training all week and the players lifted the intensity to another level that we haven't seen all season. The problem is that games like this are easy to get up for. One, Scottish are our biggest rivals and two, they were holders of a trophy that means a lot to this club. Our challenge now is to prepare like that for every game. Crofty had worked on our scrum during the week and it was much improved from the previous week. Rosey, Lloyd and Mick had strong games along with the help coming in from behind. Crofty was outstanding in broken play and ran some great lines to break tackles and run into gaps; he scored three cracking tries. Massie and Brooksie combined well in the midfield. Sean's great off load for Massie's try was outstanding and gave us the much needed try straight after half time. Over all the 36-0 score line was an outstanding achievement. What it does not tell us of the huge pressure he sustained in the first half when we were against the wind. There was a 10 minute period when we were camped on our line and our defense helped us. There were some big defensive efforts, especially from Sean Quinton and the tight five. Its always good to see one of the fatties making big tackles. It relieves so much pressure for the team when they put the work in. And that's coming from a skinny number 10. Lastly we wish Doug Hardman all the best as he is now going back to England to train as a Royal Marine. Some of the boys will be pleased to see him go as his rock star looks made him a huge fan with the ladies! Cheers, Matt PS - with the large number of senior men's players, trying to fit 60+ players into 45 starting spots for the weekend is becoming tougher. To facilitate selections, only those members who have paid their subs in full will be selected for the next games. For those of you still owing, that gives you nearly two weeks to sort it out. Further, attendance at training will be noted when selection time comes. We can't run effective sessions without all our players. ----------------------------------------------------------- Lions Jersey Raffle Keep selling your raffle tickets for the Lions' jerseys.

When the Nomad men play the Toronto Scottish, there is a cup up for grabs: the Woodburn Cup is named for Stan Woodburn, a long-standing Nomad club member and a man integral to the operation of Fletcher's Fields. If you were at the Canada-Wales test, you probably saw Stan being honoured by Rugby Canada at half-time for his contributions to rugby.
The Scottish are current holders of the Woodburn Cup beating the Nomads two out of three times in meetings last year. No matter the result, it is one of the better days up at Fletcher's for both clubs as supporter attendance tends to swell on Woodburn Cup day. The game will also be filmed by Rogers Television to be shown the following day. Wear your Nomads' gear and turnout to support all five senior teams this Saturday. ---------------------------------------------------------- Nomad Men Play U. of Birmingham (UK), Wednesday, June 22nd The Nomads will field a youthful side this Wednesday night (June 22nd) to play the University of Birmingham touring side from the UK. The game is at Fletcher's Fields at 7:00pm. There will be a carpool leaving from York Mills at 5:30pm, which will include some 20 seats on the tourists' bus. With the good numbers the men have been getting, this is a great chance to get some extra game time.

He will be sadly missed by family, friends, colleagues and Club members. With his family, Ralph emigrated to Canada from Wales, the land of his birth, in 1973, and in his professional career, was an employee of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce for 25 years. As one of the founders of the Brampton Rugby Club, his passion for the Game and his Club is seen in his hard work to ensure that we had the use of the present Clubhouse and grounds. Even as recently as Sunday 29th May, “Pops” was back in the Brampton Club, taking part in the tour of Canada by Mountain Ash RFC. Our condolences and the thoughts of all members of the Brampton Rugby Club go out to Sheila, his wife of 36 years, his daughter Helen, and all Ralph’s family and friends. The funeral will be held at the Brampton Chapel, 289 Main Street North, Brampton (905-451-1100 ) at 10:00 am on Thursday 9th June 2005. Brush up on your French as they will also be airing the segment on TFO, the Francophone arm of TVO. Apparently Craig speaks French perfectly! ---------------------------------------------------------- Rugby Players needed as Extras in British TV Production A UK production company will be in Toronto this week to shoot a segment for a documentary that will air on Britain's Channel 5 and the Discovery Network in Canada and the USA. It may sound surprising but it is true: the UK now has five channels! The show is called "The Greatest Ever" and the segment the rugby players will be used for is on the advances in weaponry throughout history. We will provide at least 25 players who will be trained on how to use a pike, which is a pole weapon used extensively by infantry as a countermeasure against cavalry assaults. The location for the shoot Friday has been changed. Instead of UofT, the segment for "The Greatest Ever" will now be on the roof of a multi-story parking lot at 200 Queen's Quay West, at the foot of Lower Simcoe Street. Rugby traing gear and running shoes will do for wardrobe. Arrive as soon as you can after work (5:00-5:30pm) with your rugby training gear. There will be instruction on how to use the pike, then the production crew will shoot us using them as they would have done in a previous era, in our training gear. Then there will be food! The series is 'The Greatest Ever'. It is a high-energy, fast paced top ten countdown of some of the most remarkable technology ever made. They've done Greatest Ever Sports Cars, Motorbikes, Fighter Planes and now this sequence is for Greatest Ever Weapons. The Toronto Nomads will be joining the likes of Jay Leno, Tom Clancy and Iron Maiden in contributing to what is shaping up to be a very exciting series. It will start airing in the UK and Canada in late June. ---------------------------------------------------------- Bus to London this Weekend, May 28th With a lengthy away game for the senior men's 1st & 2nd teams at London St. George's this Saturday, there will be bus to transport players to the games and back. of Events: ---------------------------------------------------------- Notice from the Coach & Playing Committee Great effort last night to get 40+ senior men up to Fletcher's Fields on a weeknight for a friendly match, training and our tourists' first post-match reception. Remember - there is more to rugby than just showing up to play: the social aspect of the sport is why a lot of players stay involved. Our attendance at the post-match event in the clubhouse could have been better. We know Fletcher's is a long way for most of us, but it doesn't even compare to how far the tourists had to come. For those of us still in town this weekend, let's make a good effort to come out and have a good time with the Corsairs after our match this Saturday, at Scallywags. Remember: to get the absolute latest, check the message board.
Also, this following weekend - May 28th - marks the second round of league matches. Thus we must have two solid training sessions next week with full attendance. We are back at Northern, Tuesday & Thursday 6pm. The team for Saturday The team to start against the Customs Corsairs this Saturday is listed below. Selections were made with regards to previously statements of availability, those who played Thursday, injuries and from who still needs game time. As it is a friendly, there will be liberal substitutions and many players getting on and off throughout the match. If you are not named here but are available, contact the playing committee or just show up with your gear to get a run.
Kickoff is at 2:00pm, be at Sunnybrook for 1:00pm Bring refreshments! ----------------------------------------------------------- Men's 2nds/3rds Friendly this Thursday v. Aurora Barbs @ FF The Customs Corsairs have arrived for their tour and will be playing the Nomads on Saturday, May 21st. However our guests' first match will be against the Aurora Barbarians at Fletcher's Fields on Thursday night, May 19th.
Thus the Nomad senior men will travel to Fletcher's Fields Thursday, May 19th, for an exhibition game against the Barbs at 6:45pm (or as soon as 15 players are ready). The last time they played in the ORU B (the old name for the Keenan Division) was in 1999, and by coincidence the men's first team's final league match that year was also away to Burlington. In 1999, the men's teams rarely played away together and each team was promoted/relegated on their own merit. The seconds had a chance to win their division on the final day and thus took a very strong team to Alliston. The firsts were already in 7th and could get no higher and already knew they would face a post-season playoff to avoid relegation, They took the rest of the available players to Burlington to fulfill the fixture: failure to do so was automatic relegation. Burlington played hard as they had a chance to move up in the standings, but they were gracious and supportive hosts in the bar afterwards. As we said to ourselves on the day, it was going to be hard work to get back the ORU: in the end it was 5 full seasons of rebuilding, but we're finally back. Here's to those who wrapped up the last ORU campaign for the Nomads in 1999.
----------------------------------------------------------- Player's Dinner on Friday The Nomads' Player's Dinner will be on Friday night, May 13th, at Scallywags pub. The dinner is $20 and will start at 7:30pm. Usually held in the pre-season, the Players' Dinner has been moved to the opening weekend as the first games of 2005 are on a Sunday - not a good time to have a post-match function. Join all your teammates for a Friday night social event and the season kick-off. Do not bring dates to the Players' Dinner - it is players, coaches, team management & support and old boys/girls only.
----------------------------------------------------------- See Clayton at the Laugh Resort How many rugby tourists does it take to fill a comeday club? Find out on Friday, May 20th, when Clayton will be performing at the Laugh Resort. Come down and join Toronto tourists HM Customs Corsairs for a few hours of entertainment for far less than a movie costs. The show starts at 8:00pm. Drop Clayton's name at the door for a discount. Only a couple of bucks to see some decent local comedy - and then Clayton. NB - All points of view expressed on-stage by Clayton are those of the comedian and do not necessarily represent the views of, nor should they be attributed to, the Commonwealth of Australia nor any other normal society.

Between the Nomads and some of the crew at Sportsworld, ten entries made it in. The top Nomad thus far in that pool is Jen "Whoopi" Dewling! Get your friends, family coworkers to enter as well. The Super 12 lasts well into May but it starts in one week. Nomads Acting Group Pantomime Catch several of your favourite Nomads on stage in the NAGs' (Nomads Acting Group) production of Snow White and the Several Dwarfs. Thursday, February 10th, is the night we will attend the panto en masse as a club. Tickets are $18 each and can bee book on the NAGs' site: click on the menu to the left or www.nagsplayers.com. This pantomime is the classic story with a few twists: Snow White, the most beautiful in the land, is constantly in danger from her mother, the Evil Queen. She takes refuge with the dwarfs, who try valiantly (but in vain) to protect her from danger. Add a down-on-his-luck prince, a less-than-brilliant huntsman, a mirror with attitude and assorted villagers, and you have the makings of a lively, hilarious panto! ----------------------------------------------------------- Group Rates for the Toronto Rock Lacrosse If there are enough interested club members, the Nomads can get reduced group rates to attend a Toronto Rock lacrosse game at the ACC in February. If
at least 10 people sign up, it will $25 or less per person. Games are

Nonetheless the Orange and Blue showed up to Northern Secondary School ready to play at 1:30pm. The Nomads fielded a President's XV which featured Nomad players from the age of 17 to Bill Brown. It was thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of running rugby. As a friendly, the score did not matter but U18 player Ian Rivers did have an excellent day with the boot slotting conversions. After adjourning to shower and change, a few of the Nomads were able to toast the tourists at the Fox & Fiddle on the Danforth. Though our turnout as hosts was not great, the boys from Illinois were very capable of creating their own fun. The last they were seen, Edd was leading them to Montana's. A big thanks goes out to Juan & Lloyd who organized the game, Dan for agreeing to referee and a huge thank you to Northern for the use of the field so late in the year. ----------------------------------------------------------- Crofty Getting Noticed in England Crofty is in now in England with Spalding RFC and apparently making a name for himself.
